The New Zealand Crescent Sighting Co-ordination Centre was started to establish accurate local crescent sightings each month. It was started after over a decade of effort led by Imam Afroz Ali of Al Ghazzali Centre based in Sydney. Imam Afroz Ali has run several workshops in New Zealand to explain firstly the fiqh behind establishing accurate local sightings and secondly the science behind when a sighting claim can or cannot be accepted based on sound Islamic principles. Hilal.nz is run by volunteers and is not associated with any specific organisation in New Zealand. People who attempt sighting as part of this group are spread across the length of the country.
